The Shins Possibly Self-Release Next Album

Talk of the Shins' fourth album is underway, and it may lead to a self-released record. With recording time planned for 2009, the band may be releasing their next venture through James Mercer's own Aural Apothecary label instead of their current label Sub Pop, who put out the Shins' past three records.

In a recent interview with Billboard.com, Shins' manager Ian Montone discussed the band’s interest in a new deal that would give them ownership of the masters from the upcoming album, stating that "The deal will be more of a [pressing and distribution] deal than a traditional record deal".

While the details are still being discussed, is seems as though the Shins are not looking to sever ties with Sub Pop, but rather work as a team to serve the best interest of the band.

Montone went on to say "That partner could very well remain Sub Pop, who have done a remarkable job with the band and have a great staff of people who really love music. It could be a digital partner with respect to other rights. All of this is being determined. The first goal is to make the record and see where that takes us."

Check back with PerfSpot Music as more details surface. In the meantime, head on over to the Shin’s PerfSpot profile to listen to a few tracks.
